Agustín Rodríguez Sahagún was an important Spanish politician and businessman. He was born in Ávila, Spain, on March 27, 1932. He passed away in Paris on October 13, 1991. He is most famous for being the mayor of Madrid from 1989 to 1991. He also had university degrees in economics and law.

Early Life and Business Career

Agustín studied law at the University of Deusto in Bilbao. After his studies, he worked in the publishing business for some time.

In 1976, he started a business group called the Segovian Business Federation. A year later, in 1977, he helped create the Spanish Confederation of Small and Medium Enterprises. He was chosen as its first president. This group helped small and medium-sized businesses in Spain.

Stepping into Politics

Agustín's political career began on February 24, 1978. He joined a political party called the Union of the Democratic Centre (Spain) (UCD).

In February 1979, he became the Minister of Defense. This was a very important job. He was still the Minister of Defense during the 23-F coup d'état on February 23, 1981. This was a time when some people tried to take over the government.

In March 1979, Agustín was elected as a Member of Parliament (MP). He represented the Vizcaya Province.

Changing Parties

In February 1981, Agustín was chosen to lead the UCD party. However, he left the party in August 1982. He joined Adolfo Suárez to create a new party. This new party was called the Democratic and Social Centre (CDS).

The CDS party did not win many seats in the 1982 General Election. Only two MPs from the CDS kept their seats. Agustín Rodríguez Sahagún was one of them. He represented the Ávila Province. He was elected again in the 1986 General Election.

Mayor of Madrid

In 1987, Agustín ran to become the Mayor of Madrid. He came in third place in that election.

However, in 1989, he ran for mayor again. He won against the mayor at the time, Juan Barranco Gallardo. Agustín became the Mayor of Madrid on June 20, 1989. He won with the help of the People's Party (PP).

During his time as mayor, several new tunnels were opened in Madrid. These tunnels helped to reduce traffic jams in the city. He stayed in office until April 1991. He resigned because he was not in good health.

Later Life and Legacy

Agustín Rodríguez Sahagún passed away in Paris on October 13, 1991.

On January 19, 1995, a monument was opened in his memory. It is in a park in Madrid that is also named after him.
