Ahmet Mithat (born around 1844 – died December 28, 1912) was an important writer, journalist, and publisher in the Ottoman Empire. He lived during a time called the Tanzimat period. This was a time of big changes and new ideas in the Ottoman Empire.

Ahmet Mithat was known as Ahmet Mithat Efendi in his books and articles. This helped people tell him apart from a famous politician named Midhat Pasha. Ahmet Mithat Efendi even got his name from Midhat Pasha. He worked for a while as an official and newspaper editor in a region called the Vilayet of the Danube, where Midhat Pasha was in charge.

Who Was Ahmet Mithat Efendi?

Ahmet Mithat Efendi was a very busy writer. He wrote more than 250 books and articles. He also had more traditional views compared to some other writers of his time.

He started his own newspaper in 1878. It was called Tercüman-ı Hakikat, which means "Interpreter of Truth." Before that, he wrote for another newspaper called Basiret. This newspaper was published between 1870 and 1879.

Bringing New Stories to Turkey

Ahmet Mithat Efendi played a big role in sharing new stories with Turkish readers. He published translations of Russian books. These translations were done by Olga Lebedeva. Through his work, famous Russian writers like Tolstoy, Lermontov, and Pushkin became known in Turkey.

He also helped and taught Fatma Aliye. She became one of the most famous female writers in the Ottoman Empire. Ahmet Mithat Efendi supported her work and helped her grow as an author.
