About the Ai J. White Duplex
The Ai J. White Duplex stands near the main downtown area of Newport. It is a wooden house with two and a half stories. The roof has a special cross-gabled shape. The outside of the house is covered with wooden boards and decorative shingles.
The front of the house has different sections. One part sticks out with a two-story window bay. Another part has a large window downstairs and two smaller windows upstairs. The middle section has one window on the first floor. There are also welcoming porches on both sides of the house. These porches have fancy turned posts and railings.
History of the Duplex
The house was built around 1897 by a man named Ai J. White. He was an immigrant from French Canada. Mr. White owned a workshop behind the house. In his shop, he made window sashes and blinds.
It seems he built this duplex to rent out the homes. This helped him earn extra money. Most people who lived here were working-class people. But at one point, a German-Russian immigrant named Leon Colodny lived there. He owned a business in downtown Newport. The White family sold the house in 1943.
