How Aikinsville Got Its Name

Aikinsville got its name from Reverend Shannon Akins. He owned the land where the community is located. People started calling the area "Akinsville" after him.

A post office opened in Akinsville in 1880. It helped people send and receive letters and packages. The post office stayed open for many years, finally closing in 1920.

A School for Teachers

From 1885 to 1889, a young Baptist preacher named Sidney Abram Weltmer started a special school in Akinsville. It was called the Akinsville Normal School. This school trained teachers for elementary schools. It helped prepare people to teach young students.

Later, Sidney Abram Weltmer moved to Nevada, Missouri. There, he became known for his work with the Weltmer Institute.
