Aimée Danis (born September 19, 1929 – died May 8, 2012) was a Canadian film director and producer from Quebec. She helped make the films Léolo and My Friend Max, both of which were nominated for a top Canadian film award called the Genie Award for Best Motion Picture.
Aimée Danis was born in Maniwaki, Quebec. She started her career helping with scripts for a TV company called Télévision de Radio-Canada. Later, she worked with Jacques Godbout on his film YUL 871. After that, she became the first woman in Quebec's film and television world to direct TV commercials! She directed ads for big companies like Hydro-Québec, Dominion, Desjardins, and Peugeot.
Directing Films and TV Shows
In the 1970s, Aimée Danis directed several short documentary films. These included KW+ (1970), Gaspésie oui, j'écoute (1972), Joie de vivre au Québec (1974), and Patrick, Julie, Félix et tous les autres (1974). She also directed a TV movie called Souris, tu m'inquiètes (1973). She even directed episodes for TV series like Vingt ans Express (1967), La feuille d’érable (1969), and Jo Gaillard (1975).
She won a Canadian Film Award for Best Short Documentary for her film KW+ at the 22nd Canadian Film Awards. In 1973, she was one of 14 filmmakers from Quebec who signed a letter. This letter protested how films from Quebec were being treated. Because of this protest, the 25th Canadian Film Awards ceremony was canceled, and the 26th Canadian Film Awards were moved to a later date in 1975.
Becoming a Producer
In the 1980s, Aimée Danis started working as a film producer. As a producer, she helped manage the making of films. Her film Léolo was nominated for Best Picture at the 13th Genie Awards in 1992. Her film My Friend Max was also nominated at the 15th Genie Awards in 1994.
She also produced other films, including Le diable à quatre (1987), Les heures précieuses (1989), The Paper Wedding (1990), Buster's Bedroom (1991), and Jack Paradise: Montreal by Night (2004).
Aimée Danis was married to film director Guy Fournier. They ran a film company together called Les Productions du Verseau.
