Aimi Kobayashi (born September 23, 1995) is a talented Japanese classical pianist. She is known for her amazing piano skills. Aimi was a finalist in the 17th International Chopin Piano Competition. She also won 4th prize in the 18th International Chopin Piano Competition. These are very important piano contests.

Aimi Kobayashi was born in Ube, a city in Japan's Yamaguchi Prefecture. She started playing the piano when she was just three years old! By age seven, she was already performing with an orchestra. Since she was eight, Yuko Ninomiya has been her piano teacher.

Early Achievements and Awards

Aimi has won many awards for her musical talent. She received the "Glory Culture Prize" three times from Yamaguchi Prefecture. The Polish government also gave her a special Frédéric Chopin passport. This shows how much they recognized her connection to the famous composer.

Aimi has performed in many countries around the world. These include France, Brazil, Poland, Russia, South Korea, and the United States. She has played in famous concert halls like Salle Cortot in Paris and Carnegie Hall in New York City. The American Association for Development of the Gifted and Talented (AADGT) has supported her for many years.

Music Releases and Other Work

In 2010, Aimi released her first CD and DVD, called Aimi Kobayashi Debut. After that, she released another CD named Passion with EMI Classics Japan. In 2011, she also tried acting! She appeared in a Japanese movie called Sleep, directed by Katsumi Sakaguchi.

Aimi has released three more CDs since then. Two of these CDs feature only music by Chopin. The third CD includes music by both Chopin and Franz Liszt.

Competition Successes

Aimi has a strong history in piano competitions:

  • In 2002, she won first place in the Young Piano Competition. This was organized by the Piano Teachers' National Association of Japan.
  • In 2009, she won the junior section prize at the Asia-Pacific International Chopin Piano Competition in South Korea.
  • In 2011, she earned a gold medal at the Asia International Chopin Competition. She won this for her performance in the concerto section. She also received the Yasuko Fukuda prize.
  • In 2012, she placed third in the Gina Bachauer Young Artist Competition.
  • In 2015, she was a finalist in the 17th International Chopin Piano Competition.
  • In 2021, she achieved 4th place in the 18th International Chopin Piano Competition. She shared this prize with another talented pianist.

Personal Life

On January 1, 2023, Aimi Kobayashi married Kyohei Sorita. He is also a famous pianist and was a childhood friend. They both competed in the 18th Chopin Piano Competition. They have also shared exciting news that they are expecting a child.
