Air Defence Research and Development Establishment facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Air Defence Research and Development Establishment (ADRDE) was a special group of scientists and engineers. They worked for the War Office, which was the part of the British government that managed the army. Their main job was to study and develop radar technology for the British Army.

The ADRDE was formed in 1941. It was created when two groups joined together. One was the Air Defence Experimental Establishment in Christchurch, Dorset. The other was a small team called the "Army Cell." This team had been working on radar design within another research group called the Telecommunications Research Establishment at Bawdsey Manor.

What Was the ADRDE?

The ADRDE was a very important organization during World War II. Their main goal was to create better radar systems. Radar uses radio waves to detect objects like enemy airplanes or ships. This technology was vital for defending Britain during the war.

How the ADRDE Started

The ADRDE didn't exist under this name for very long. In May 1942, the group moved to Malvern. When they moved, their name changed to the Radar Research and Development Establishment (RRDE).

Later, in March 1943, another group called the Signals Research and Development Establishment (SRDE) took over the old ADRDE buildings in Christchurch. Many years later, in 1976, the SRDE also moved and joined the RRDE in Malvern.

What Did the ADRDE Do?

Even though the ADRDE existed for a short time, they made important contributions. While they were still known as ADRDE, they quickly developed a radar system called the SLC radar. This radar was used to help find enemy aircraft.

They also worked on other important radar systems. These included the GL Mk. II radar and the beginning of the GL Mk. III radar projects. These radar systems were crucial for helping the British Army track targets and defend the country.
