Airedale Terrier
An Australian & New Zealand Champion.

The Airedale Terrier, often called the "Airedale," is a type of dog that first came from a place called Airedale in Yorkshire, England. It was traditionally known as the "King of Terriers" because it was the largest dog in the terrier family. This breed was also called the Waterside Terrier. This name came from its original job: hunting otters in and around the valleys of the River Aire. In England, Airedale Terriers have even worked as police dogs.

About the Airedale Terrier

The Airedale Terrier is a strong and active dog. They are known for being smart, brave, and loyal. These dogs are very energetic and love to play. They need plenty of exercise to stay happy and healthy. Their coat is usually wiry and comes in a mix of tan and black or grizzle colors.

History of the Breed

The Airedale Terrier was first bred in the mid-1800s. This happened in the Aire Valley of Yorkshire, England. People wanted a dog that could hunt otters and other small animals. They needed a dog that was good both in the water and on land. Breeders crossed different terrier types, like the Old English Black and Tan Terrier, with otterhounds. This mix created the Airedale, a dog that was excellent at swimming and tracking.

Airedales in Service

Airedale Terriers are not just pets; they have also served in important roles. During World War I, they were used as messenger dogs. They carried messages across battlefields, showing great bravery. Their intelligence and loyalty also made them good police dogs in England. They are still used today in various search and rescue missions.
