Akenehi Hei (born around 1878, died 28 November 1910) was a very important nurse and midwife from New Zealand. She made history by becoming the first ever Māori nurse. She officially qualified as a nurse in 1908.

Akenehi Hei was connected to the Te Whakatōhea and Te Whānau-ā-Apanui iwi (tribes). She was born in a place called Te Kaha, which is in the Bay of Plenty region of New Zealand.

Becoming a Nurse

After her schooling, Akenehi Hei decided to become a nurse. This was a challenging path, especially for Māori women at that time. She worked hard and successfully qualified as a nurse in 1908. She also became a midwife, which means she helped mothers during childbirth. She worked at Napier Hospital, helping many patients.

Her Legacy

Akenehi Hei's life was short, as she passed away on 28 November 1910. She died from a serious illness called typhoid fever. Even though her career was brief, her impact was huge. She opened the door for other Māori people to enter the nursing profession. Her dedication to helping others is still remembered today.
