His Early Years
Akira Terao was born in Yokohama, a city in Kanagawa prefecture, Japan. His father, Jūkichi Uno, was also a well-known actor and film director.
Akira Terao went to several schools. These included Wako Gakuen and Hosei University Daini Senior High School. He later graduated from a special vocational school called Bunka Gakuin.

Akira Terao has had a long and successful career. He started in music and then became a popular actor.
Singing and Music
In 1966, Akira Terao began his music journey. He joined a band called The Savage as a bassist. This was a "group sounds" band, which was a popular music style in Japan at the time.
He released his first solo album in 1970. But he became truly famous in 1981. This was with his hit song Ruby no Yubiwa (ルビーの指環). The album it was on, called Reflections (リフレクションズ), sold a huge 1.6 million copies in Japan.
Acting on Screen
Akira Terao started acting in movies in 1968. His first film was The Sands of Kurobe. It was directed by Kei Kumai.
He later worked with the famous director Akira Kurosawa. He appeared in Kurosawa's film Ran in 1985. Five years later, he was in another Kurosawa film, Dreams.
Terao has also worked with director Takashi Koizumi. They made films like After the Rain and The Professor's Beloved Equation. He has also acted in many TV dramas. He won an award for best actor at the 47th Blue Ribbon Awards for his role in Half a Confession.

Akira Terao is currently married to Mayumi Hoshino. He is often seen wearing sunglasses. He also has a nickname, "hoppe," which means "cheek." This is because he has two moles on one of his cheeks.
