Alabama and Florida Railroad (1898–1900) facts for kids
The Alabama and Florida Railroad (A&F RR) was a company that started building a railway line in the late 1800s. Their goal was to connect Georgiana, Alabama all the way to Graceville, Florida. Even though they didn't finish the whole line themselves, their work became an important part of a much larger railroad system.
What Was the Alabama and Florida Railroad?
The Alabama and Florida Railroad, often called the A&F RR, was a company created to build a new railway. This railway was planned to run through parts of Alabama and Florida. It aimed to help transport goods and people between these two states.
Building the Railroad
Construction on the A&F RR line began in the late 1800s. By the year 1899, the company had successfully built about 28 miles of track. This completed section reached from Georgiana, Alabama, to a town called River Falls, Alabama. Building railroads was a big job back then, requiring a lot of effort and resources.
Joining the Louisville and Nashville Railroad
In 1899, the A&F RR made an agreement with a much bigger company: the Louisville and Nashville Railroad (L&N RR). The A&F RR leased their completed 28 miles of track to the L&N RR. This meant the L&N RR could use the tracks for their trains.
Just one year later, in 1900, the A&F RR sold everything to the L&N RR. This included the tracks they had already built and the right-of-way (the land where they planned to build) for the rest of the line to Graceville, Florida. After this sale, the Alabama and Florida Railroad company stopped existing as a separate business. The L&N RR then finished building the entire line to Graceville in 1902.
