Alan Milner Everitt (born August 17, 1926 – died December 8, 2008) was a British historian who focused on local history. He was a very important person in studying the history of different parts of England after World War II.

Alan Everitt's Life and Work

Alan Milner Everitt was born on August 17, 1926. He grew up in a town called Sevenoaks. He went to university and earned his first advanced degree from the University of St Andrews in 1951. Later, he earned a special doctorate degree from the University of London in 1957. For his doctorate, he studied the time leading up to the English Civil War. His teacher and guide for this work was R. C. Latham.

In 1957, Everitt joined the University of Leicester. He worked as a research assistant for Joan Thirsk, who was a historian studying how people lived and made money. In 1968, he took over from W. G. Hoskins as the Hatton Professor of English Local History. This was a very important teaching position. He held this job until 1982, when he retired because he was not well.

After he retired, in 1989, he was chosen to be a Fellow of the British Academy. This is a great honor for people who have done important work in the humanities and social sciences.

Alan Everitt passed away on December 8, 2008, when he was 82 years old.
