The Life of Alan de Wyntoun
Alan de Wyntoun was the son of Alan de Winton and Margaret de Bothwell. He became known as the Lord of Seton because of his marriage to Margaret de Seton. This title came to him through his wife, as her father was a member of the Order of Knights of the Hospital of Saint John of Jerusalem. This was a famous group of knights who helped pilgrims and defended Christian lands.
Alan's marriage to Margaret de Seton caused a big argument with other people who wanted to marry her. This disagreement led to a conflict known as ‘the Wyntoun’s war’. It was a tough time with many fights.
In 1347, Alan de Wyntoun decided to join a crusade. This meant he was going on a long journey to fight for his faith. Sadly, he passed away while he was on his way to the crusade.
