This community got its name from Alan McCullough. He was a famous architect in Virginia, which means he designed buildings. The story of Alanton starts in the early 1920s. That's when Alan McCullough and his family bought a large piece of land here. At that time, there were only three houses in the entire area! Alan, the architect, and his family lived in one of these first homes.

One of the very first people to move into Alanton was a person named Louisa Venable Kyle. She made her home on Woodhouse Road, becoming an important part of the community's early days. These first families helped shape what Alanton is today.
