Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Alasdair Mór mac Domhnaill was an important person from a long time ago in Scotland. He was a son of Domhnall mac Raghnaill, who was the first leader of a big family group called Clan Donald.

Who Was Alasdair Mór?

We first hear about Alasdair Mór in the year 1253. At that time, he was present when his brother, Aonghus Mór, signed an important paper for a place called Paisley Abbey.

A Respected Leader

Historians from the 1800s, Angus and Archibald Macdonald, believed Alasdair Mór was a very important man. This is because he is the only brother of Aonghus Mór that we know about from old records.

Old writings from 1299, called the Annals of Connacht, describe him as a very kind and generous person. He was known for being helpful to others.

His Legacy

In 1299, Alasdair Mór died in a fight. This conflict was against Alasdair of Argyll and another family group called the MacDougalls.

Alasdair Mór had at least five sons. Their names were Dòmhnall, Gòraidh, Donnchadh, Eoin, and Eachann. His son, Dòmhnall, took over as the main leader of their family group after him.

Today, Alasdair Mór is remembered as the ancestor of Clan MacAlister. This means that the MacAlister family traces its history back to him.
