Who is Alastor?
Alastor is a very popular character from the Hazbin Hotel series. He is known for his mysterious nature and powerful abilities. He plays a key role in Charlie's plan to help others.
How Alastor Was Created
Vivienne Medrano first imagined Alastor when she was in art school. He appeared in her early drawings around 2008. He was meant to be a character in her webcomic series ZooPhobia. This was planned for a story about angels and powerful beings. However, that story arc was later changed. It then became the idea for Hazbin Hotel. Alastor's full design for ZooPhobia was never officially published.
Alastor's Look and Voice
In his early designs for ZooPhobia, Alastor looked like a red and black deer-like creature. He could change into a human-like deer form. He was known for making agreements with others. He enjoyed tricking people into helping him. He was part of a group of unique characters. This group later became the main cast of Hazbin Hotel.
In Hazbin Hotel, Alastor looks mostly human. He has some deer features, like small antlers and sharp teeth. He always wears a red suit and has a wide, permanent smile. In his past life, Alastor was a radio show host. He passed away sometime in the 1930s. When he arrived in Hell, he quickly became very powerful. He gained control over many areas. His voice often sounds like an old radio. It has a static effect and plays old-time radio sounds.
Edward Bosco was the speaking voice for Alastor in the pilot episode. Gabriel C. Brown provided his singing voice. In the full series, Amir Talai took over both roles.
Alastor's Story in the Series
Alastor's journey in the Hazbin Hotel world is full of interesting events. He often appears when Charlie needs help. He also has his own secret goals.
Early Appearances and Music
Alastor first appeared briefly in a music video in 2018. This was called "Inside of Every Demon is a Rainbow." It came out a year before the Hazbin Hotel pilot episode.
Gabriel C. Brown, Alastor's pilot singing voice, also sang as Alastor in other music videos. One popular song was "Insane" in June 2021. Another song, "Alastor's Game," was released in 2020.
The Hazbin Hotel Pilot Episode
Alastor made his first full appearance in the pilot episode, "That's Entertainment," in 2019. He is shown as a powerful figure in Hell. He visited the "Happy Hotel" after seeing Charlie's TV interview. He offered to help run the hotel. He said he believed helping characters become better was impossible. He just wanted to watch them try and fail for his own fun. He brought Niffty and Husk to work at the hotel. Niffty became the maid, and Husk became the bartender. Alastor then used his powers to change the hotel. He also defended it from an attack by Sir Pentious. After this, he renamed it the "Hazbin Hotel."
Alastor's Adventures in Hazbin Hotel (2024-present)
In the 2024 Hazbin Hotel animated series, Alastor continued to help Charlie. He assisted her in running her hotel. In the episode "Overture," Alastor helped make a TV commercial for the hotel. He noted it had been seven years since he was very active in Hell.
In "Radio Killed the Video Star," Alastor's rival, Vox, learned of his return. After a broadcast debate, Vox and his friends, the "Vees," tried to stop Alastor. They wanted to prevent him from making agreements with Charlie. They sent Sir Pentious to spy on Alastor at the hotel. Sir Pentious was later discovered. Charlie forgave him, and he decided to truly stay at the hotel. Alastor then teased Vox about this.
In "Scrambled Eggs," Alastor took care of Sir Pentious's egg minions. He brought them to a meeting with other powerful figures in Hell. At the meeting, another character, Velvette, suggested that Carmilla Carmine had defeated a powerful angel. Alastor was curious. He sent an egg minion to find out if this was true.
In "Masquerade," it was revealed that Husk was once a powerful figure himself. He made an agreement with Alastor to keep his power. This agreement meant Alastor gained control over Husk.
In "Dad Beat Dad," Charlie's father, Lucifer, visited the hotel. He and Alastor argued about who was a better father figure to Charlie. Alastor's friend Mimzy interrupted them. Husk warned Alastor not to trust Mimzy. Husk also mentioned that Alastor was bound by an agreement to someone else. Alastor warned Husk never to speak of it again. Later, some bad characters attacked the hotel looking for Mimzy. Alastor used his powers to defeat them. He then told Mimzy to leave.
In "Hello Rosie!", Charlie failed to get help for the hotel from Heaven. With only one month until a yearly event where angels try to remove characters from Hell, Alastor convinced Charlie to make an agreement with him. He told her about Carmilla defeating an angel. In return, he asked for a future favor. Alastor then took Charlie to meet his friend Rosie. Rosie was a powerful figure. Together, they convinced the residents to help defend the hotel against the angels.
In "The Show Must Go On," the night before the big event, Alastor thought about his time at the hotel. He realized he was getting used to the residents. The next day, a big battle happened between the angels and the characters from Hell. Alastor faced Adam, a powerful angel. Alastor was injured in the fight and had to retreat. After the battle, the Vees celebrated Alastor's setback. They planned to gain more power in Hell. Alastor, still injured, hoped to be free from his old agreement. He also hoped to gain more control in Hell. He then cleaned himself up and rejoined Charlie and her friends.
