The Albert Ridyard Three-Decker is a special old building in Worcester, Massachusetts. It's called a "three-decker" because it has three floors, with one apartment on each floor. These types of buildings were very popular in New England.

This building was built in 1914. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1990. This list helps protect important historical places in the United States. The building was recognized for its cool Colonial Revival style, even though some of those original details have changed over time.

What is the Albert Ridyard Three-Decker Like?

The Albert Ridyard Three-Decker is located in the Main South area of Worcester. This is a neighborhood just south of the city's downtown. You can find it on Mount Pleasant Street, which is a small street near Main Street.

Building Design and Features

This building is three stories tall. It is made of wood and has a roof that is almost flat. The front of the building has two main parts. On the right side, there's a bay window that sticks out. This bay window goes up all three floors.

On the left side of the building, you'll find the main door. The roof hangs out far over this side, making a deep cover. A big support holds up this part of the roof. Today, the outside of the building is covered with vinyl or aluminum siding.

Original Look of the Building

When the building was first put on the National Register, it looked a bit different. It had porches on the left side, supported by fancy Tuscan columns. The roof line had decorative blocks called modillion blocks. The walls were covered in wooden clapboards. There were also bands of shinglework between each floor, adding to its unique style.

History of the Building

The Albert Ridyard Three-Decker was built in 1914. This was a time when many new homes were being built on the south side of Worcester. The city was growing, and more places were needed for people to live.

Early Owners and Residents

Interestingly, the first owners of this building didn't live there themselves. They were people who owned many properties. Albert Ridyard, the first owner, was a plumber. He owned about twenty different homes in the city.

The people who rented apartments in the building were often skilled workers. This included mechanics and owners of small businesses in the area. It was a home for many working families in Worcester.
