Albert Young (born September 28, 1877 – died July 22, 1940) was an American boxer who won a gold medal at the 1904 Summer Olympics. He was known for his skills as a welterweight boxer, which is a specific weight class in boxing. Albert was born in a place called Lauterecken, which was part of the German Empire back in 1877.

Becoming an Olympic Champion

Albert Young was an amateur boxer, meaning he didn't get paid to fight. He won the Olympic Gold Medal in 1904 at the Olympic Games held in St. Louis, Missouri. He competed in the 148-pound weight class.

The 1904 Olympic Boxing

The 1904 Olympics were a bit unusual because most of the athletes were from the United States. In Albert's weight class, only four boxers competed, and all of them were Americans. Albert Young showed his talent by winning against Harry Spanger in the final match to earn his gold medal.

Albert Young's Olympic Matches

  • He won against Jack Egan from the United States.
  • He then won against Harry Spanger from the United States to claim the gold.

Life After Boxing

After Albert Young stopped boxing, he started a new career as a promoter. A promoter helps organize and put on boxing matches. He began this work in his hometown of San Francisco in 1906.

Starting as a Promoter

Albert first worked at a smaller place called the Association Club. Many new boxers in the San Francisco Bay Area got their start there. Later, he moved on to organize bigger boxing events. In 1923, Albert moved his promoting business to National Hall. He continued to help new boxers get their first fights.

Growing the Sport

In 1925, longer boxing matches (up to 10 rounds) became legal. This allowed Albert to feature more exciting and higher-quality fights. He often had a 10-round main event, while still helping young boxers begin their careers. During the 1920s, Albert was also involved with events at the Golden Gate Arena in San Francisco.

Challenges and Legacy

When the Great Depression happened, it was a tough time for everyone, including boxing promoters. Albert found it hard to keep his business going and promoted fewer events during this period. He continued to promote boxing matches at National Hall until he passed away in 1940 in San Francisco, California. Albert was very sick, and many of the people who helped him were former boxers he had promoted. He left behind his wife and daughter.
