Growing Up and Starting Out
Alberta Watson was born in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, in 1955. She grew up in Toronto with her mother and brother. When she was 15, she started acting with a local theater group called T.H.O.G. (Theatre House of God).
She also took part in a workshop for the musical Hair. During this time, she acted in a play called Hamlet. The director of Hamlet, René Bonnière, later directed her again in the TV series La Femme Nikita.
Her Acting Journey
Alberta Watson got her first acting job at age 19 in a CBC movie called Honor Thy Father. Early in her career, she played Mitzi in the 1978 film In Praise of Older Women. For this role, she was nominated for a Genie Award, which is a big award in Canadian film.
A year later, she won the Best Actress award at the Yorkton Short Film and Video Festival for a short film called "Exposure". She then moved to the United States, living in Los Angeles and later New York City. She lived in New Jersey for eight years before returning to Toronto.
