Aldwych tramway station facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Aldwych Tramway Station was a special underground stop for trams in London. It was located right underneath a street called Kingsway. It's important not to mix it up with the Aldwych tube station, which was for underground trains. This tram stop was actually part of a bigger system called the Kingsway tramway subway, which was a tunnel just for trams!

The first trams started running to Aldwych on 24 February 1906. These trams traveled from a place called Angel in Islington. Later, on 10 April 1908, more tram services began. These new routes connected Highbury & Islington station to famous spots like Tower Bridge and Kennington Gate.

The Aldwych tramway station served passengers for many years. However, it eventually closed down on 6 April 1952.

What Happened to the Station?

After the tram station closed, parts of its location were used for something new. The Strand Underpass, which is a road tunnel for cars, opened in 1964. This underpass comes to the surface partly where the old Aldwych tramway station used to be.

Even though the underpass goes through the old station area, you can't see any signs of the tram station today. Nothing is visible from the street above or from inside the road tunnel itself. It's like the station disappeared!
