Aldyr Schlee facts for kids
Aldyr Garcia Schlee (born in Jaguarão, Brazil, on November 22, 1934 – died in Pelotas, Brazil, on November 15, 2018) was a very talented Brazilian person. He was a writer, a journalist, a translator, an illustrator (someone who draws pictures for books), and a professor.
Biography
Aldyr Schlee was very interested in the connections between Brazil and Uruguay. He also loved the literature (books and stories) from both countries. He especially knew a lot about writers from his home state, Rio Grande do Sul.
He wrote many short stories, and his work was often included in collections of stories called anthologies. Some of his books were even published in Spanish in Uruguay first.
Aldyr Schlee spoke both Portuguese and Spanish perfectly. He also grew up hearing German, which was a common language in his region.
In 1953, Aldyr Schlee designed the famous yellow and green jersey for the Brazil national football team. This jersey is known all over the world! He passed away on November 15, 2018, just a week before his 84th birthday. It was also the day before a friendly football match between Brazil and Uruguay in London.
Prizes Received
Aldyr Schlee won many important awards for his writing. He received the special Bienal Nestlé de Literatura Brasileira literary prize two times. He also won the Prêmio Açorianos de Literatura prize five times!
Witnessing Language Rules During World War II
In an interview from 2011, Aldyr Schlee shared a powerful memory from when he was a child during World War II. He saw German-Brazilian farmers who had been arrested. They were caught speaking their native language, even though the Brazilian government at the time had made it against the rules to speak it.
He explained how shocking it was for him to see these men being paraded through the city of Santa Cruz do Sul. This experience made a lasting impression on him throughout his life.
