Aleksandr Kurosh facts for kids
Aleksandr Gennadyevich Kurosh (Russian: Алекса́ндр Генна́диевич Ку́рош; January 19, 1908 – May 18, 1971) was a Soviet mathematician. He is well-known for his important work in a field of mathematics called abstract algebra. He wrote a very important book titled The Theory of Groups in 1944. This book was one of the first modern and advanced books about group theory.
His Life and Studies
Aleksandr Kurosh was born in Yartsevo, which was part of the Russian Empire at the time. He passed away in Moscow. He studied at Moscow State University and earned his highest degree (a doctorate) in 1936. His teacher was Pavel Alexandrov.
In 1937, he became a professor at Moscow State University. From 1949 until his death, he led the Department of Higher Algebra there.
His Work in Mathematics
Kurosh was a very influential teacher and researcher. He guided 27 students in their PhD studies. One of his students was Sergei Chernikov. Together, they explored how groups work, especially the connections between groups that have a limited number of elements (finite groups) and those that have an unlimited number (infinite groups). They also discovered a special type of groups called the Kurosh-Chernikov class of groups.
Kurosh and his students made many important discoveries in different areas of algebra. They worked on topics like the theory of associative algebras, lattice theory, and the theory of universal algebras.
Key Publications
Aleksandr Kurosh wrote several important books and papers. His most famous work is:
- The Theory of Groups (Теория групп), first published in 1944. This book was later translated into German and English.
He also wrote other significant books like:
- Vorlesungen über Allgemeine Algebra (Lectures on General Algebra)
- Curso de Álgebra Superior (Course of Higher Algebra)
