Alessandro Longo (born December 31, 1864 – died November 3, 1945) was an Italian composer and music expert. He was known for his work with the music of Domenico Scarlatti.
Early Life and Education
Alessandro Longo was born in a town called Amantea, Italy. He loved music from a young age. He went to the Naples Conservatory to study music. There, he learned to play the piano from a teacher named Beniamino Cesi. He also studied how to create music (composition) with Paolo Serrao.
After finishing his studies, Longo started teaching piano. He began teaching at the Naples Conservatory in 1887. He first helped his old teacher, Cesi, and then took over as the main piano professor in 1897.
A Career in Music
Alessandro Longo was a very talented pianist. He often played music with groups of other musicians. These groups included the Ferni Quartet and the Quartetto Napoletano. He was known for his amazing concert performances.
Longo also helped start many music schools and groups in Naples. In 1914, he began editing a music magazine called L'Arte Pianistica. This magazine was about piano playing. In 1944, he became the Director of the Naples Conservatory. He passed away the next year in Naples, at the age of 80.
His Musical Legacy
Today, Alessandro Longo is mostly remembered for his important work with the music of Domenico Scarlatti. Scarlatti was a famous composer who wrote many pieces for keyboard instruments. Longo put together a huge list of almost all of Scarlatti's keyboard works.
For many years, people used Longo's numbers to identify Scarlatti's pieces. Later, another music expert named Ralph Kirkpatrick created a new list. Kirkpatrick's list changed the order and groups of Scarlatti's pieces. Longo's work was still very important because he was the first to publish all of Scarlatti's works in 11 volumes. He also helped edit music by another composer, Domenico Gallo.
Alessandro Longo also wrote his own music. His compositions include pieces for two pianos playing together. He also wrote suites (collections of short musical pieces) for piano with other instruments like the bassoon, oboe, flute, and clarinet.
Family Life
Alessandro Longo's son, Achille Longo, also became a composer. He was born in 1900 and passed away in 1954.
