Alexander Cleghorn (1859–1922) was a very clever Scottish engineer and shipbuilder. He helped design and build many ships during his career. He was also the leader, or President, of a big group called the Institution of Engineers and Shipbuilders in Scotland from 1919 to 1921. This group helps engineers and shipbuilders learn and share ideas.

Alexander Cleghorn's Life

Early Life and Education

Alexander Cleghorn was born in a part of Scotland called Fife in 1859. He went to school in St Andrews. After that, he studied two important subjects at university. He learned about engineering at the University of Edinburgh. He also studied naval architecture at the University of Glasgow. Naval architecture is the science of designing and building ships.

Career in Shipbuilding

After finishing his studies, Alexander Cleghorn started an apprenticeship. This is like a training period where you learn a job by working. He trained with a famous company in Govan called Robert Napier and Sons. They were well-known for building ships.

In 1897, he moved to another company, Barclay Curle & Co. There, he became their engineering manager. This meant he was in charge of all the engineering work. Later, in 1905, he joined a very important company called the Fairfield Shipbuilding and Engineering Company. He became their Engineering Director, which was a very senior role.

Recognitions and Retirement

Because of his important work and knowledge, Alexander Cleghorn was chosen as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh in 1913. Being a Fellow means you are recognized as a leading expert in your field.

He retired from his work in 1920. Alexander Cleghorn passed away in Glasgow on 4 May 1922.
