Alexander Fraser, 4th Lord Lovat (born 1527 – died 1557 or 1558) was an important Scottish nobleman. He was the leader, or Chief, of Clan Fraser of Lovat from 1544 until his death.
Alexander became the Chief of his clan when he was just seventeen years old. This happened in July 1544, after his father, Hugh Fraser, 3rd Lord Lovat, and his older brother, Simon, sadly died in a battle near Loch Lochy. Because he was so young, a wise man named Robert Reid, who was the Bishop of Orkney, became his legal guardian. Bishop Reid was also a relative of Alexander's mother.
In 1555, Alexander met Mary of Guise, who was the Queen Regent of Scotland at the time. He met her when she visited Inverness to hold special court meetings called assizes. Alexander Fraser passed away in 1557 or 1558 from an illness called rheumatism.
Family Life and Children
Alexander Fraser, Lord Lovat, married a woman named Janet Campbell. She was the daughter of Sir John Campbell of Cawdor Castle. Janet lived until 1592.
Alexander and Janet had several children together:
- Hugh Fraser, 5th Lord Lovat
- Thomas Fraser of Knockie and Strichen
- James Fraser of Ardochy
- Anna Fraser, who married John Fraser of Dalcrosa
When Janet Campbell died in 1592, she left some special items to her grandson, Simon Fraser, Lord Lovat. These gifts included two silver cups, a bed with "Scottish green" curtains, and the large main table from Dalcross Castle.
