Life of Alexander Graham
Becoming an Earl
Alexander Graham became the Earl of Menteith in 1493. He was likely the grandson of Malise Graham, who was the 1st Earl of Menteith. Historians believe Alexander's father was Patrick Graham.
Before 1493, after his grandfather Malise died in 1490, Alexander was called an "heir." In Scotland during the 1400s, someone was often called an heir if they had not yet reached the "age of majority." This means they were not old enough to legally take on their full responsibilities. Because of this, it is thought that Alexander Graham, the 2nd Earl, was born around 1475.
Family Life
Alexander Graham married Margaret Buchanan. She was the daughter of Walter Buchanan, who belonged to the Clan Buchanan. Alexander and Margaret had two sons and one daughter.
In 1533, some people from the Clan Gregor took 40 cows from Alexander and his son, William. William later became the 3rd Earl of Menteith. Alexander Graham passed away sometime between January 31, 1536, and February 27, 1537.
