This was a period after the American Civil War when the country was rebuilding. François was a senator from 1868 until his death in 1869.

About Alexander R. François

François was born in 1820 in a place called St. Martin Parish, Louisiana. He had several jobs during his life. He worked as a planter, which means he managed a farm. He was also a butcher and a merchant, selling goods to people. He even worked for a newspaper called the New Orleans Tribune.

In 1868, the people of Louisiana elected him to be a senator. He joined the Louisiana State Senate as a "Radical." This term meant he supported big changes to help African Americans gain equal rights after slavery ended. He served in the Senate until he died in 1869.

His Final Days

Alexander R. François died because of a serious attack. He was badly hurt in his own store in St. Martin Parish. After the attack, he was taken to New Orleans for care. He tried to get justice against those who attacked him. Sadly, he died on May 21, 1869, from a severe illness that resulted from his injuries.

His funeral was a very important event. The Governor of Louisiana, Henry C. Warmoth, attended. Many other government officials were there too, including members of the Senate and House of Representatives. He had a Catholic church service at the Augustine Church in New Orleans and was buried in the St. Louis cemetery.

François was one of two senators from his time who died in 1869. The other was John Randall.

Alexander R. François had a son named Alexander R. François Jr. He was born around 1842 or 1843. His son also worked in government as a justice of the peace in Saint Martin Parish. After his father's death, Alexander Jr. left the area.
