Alexander Read (born 1786 – died July 18, 1870) was an important surgeon in Ireland. He served as the president of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI) twice, in 1825 and again in 1835. This means he was a leader for surgeons in his country.

Who Was Alexander Read?

Alexander Read was born in a town called Downpatrick. He studied hard and earned a special degree, an MA, from Trinity College Dublin in 1827. This was a big achievement for his time.

His Training and Early Career

Alexander Read learned how to be a surgeon by training with a well-known doctor named Sir Henry Jebb. After his training, he became a full member of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland in 1810. This was a key step in his medical career.

A Busy and Skilled Surgeon

Dr. Read worked as a surgeon in several places. He helped patients at Mercer's, the Blue Coat Hospital, and Simpson's Hospital. He also worked in Dublin's prisons, caring for those who were incarcerated. People thought he was a very skilled surgeon. He had many patients who came to him for medical help.

Alexander Read was also interested in science. He taught about medical law, which is called medical jurisprudence, at the Park-street School of Medicine. Later, he was also involved with the Richmond Hospital School. He was a respected figure in the medical world of his time.
