Alexander Stewart (born in 1477, died in 1537) was an important Scottish church leader. He was also known as Alexander Stewart of Pitcairn. He was the son of Alexander Stewart, Duke of Albany. His mother was Catherine Sinclair. Because of a legal decision in 1516, Alexander was not able to inherit his father's noble title.

However, being born into a powerful family helped him have a very successful career in the church. He held many important positions throughout his life.

Alexander Stewart was born into a very important Scottish family. His father was the Duke of Albany. This meant Alexander was connected to the royal family of Scotland. Even though he couldn't inherit his father's title, his family's influence opened doors for him in the church.

A Career in the Church

Alexander Stewart spent most of his life working in the church. He held many different roles, often managing church properties and their income. This was a common way for noble families to ensure their children had important positions.

Alexander was in charge of several important religious places.

Alexander held other significant positions too:

  • He was in charge of the Collegiate Church of Dunbar from 1504.
  • He became the Dean of Brechin by 1523, and possibly even earlier. A Dean is a senior leader in a church district.

Becoming a Bishop

One of his most important roles was becoming a bishop.

  • In 1529, the King chose him to become the Bishop of Moray.
  • The Pope then officially approved this choice on September 13, 1529.
  • He likely became a consecrated bishop in 1532. This meant he was officially given the spiritual authority of a bishop.
  • Even after becoming a bishop, he was allowed to continue managing his abbeys.

Alexander Stewart died on December 21, 1537.
