Alexander Young (bishop) facts for kids
Alexander Young (died 1684) was a Scottish bishop.
Alexander Young was born in Aberdeen, Scotland, in 1629. He became a minister in the Scottish Church.
Life as a Church Leader
During Alexander Young's time, there was a big disagreement in Scotland. King Charles wanted to have bishops lead the Scottish Church. However, many people in Scotland did not agree with this. They preferred a different way of running their church. This led to a difficult time for the Scottish Church.
In 1664, Alexander Young moved from being a minister in Dalmeny to serving as a minister in Cramond Kirk. A few years later, in 1666, he moved again to become an Archdeacon in St Andrews.
Becoming a Bishop
In late 1671, Alexander Young became the Bishop of Edinburgh. He held this important role for several years. In 1679, he moved to become the Bishop of Ross. This move was arranged by powerful people, like the Duchess of Lauderdale. She wanted another church leader, John Paterson, to become the Bishop of Edinburgh.
His Final Years
Alexander Young became unwell. In 1684, he traveled to France to have an operation. Sadly, he did not recover from the surgery and passed away a few weeks later.
