Early Life and Education

Alexis Wilkinson grew up in Wheaton, Illinois and Milwaukee, Wisconsin. She finished high school at Nicolet High School. When she was younger, Alexis enjoyed writing for fun. In high school, she even created a funny newsletter with her friends. However, she did not think of writing as a serious job back then.

She later attended Harvard University. There, she studied economics, but she really wanted to write for television. Wilkinson joined the writing team of The Harvard Lampoon during her first year. In her third year, she was elected president of the magazine. She was the first African American student to hold this important position.

Alexis Wilkinson's Career

Just before she graduated from Harvard, Wilkinson sent copies of The Harvard Lampoon to Harvard alumni who were trustees. She was looking for job opportunities. David Mandel, who was the showrunner (main producer and writer) for the TV show Veep, received one of these copies. He hired Wilkinson to join his writing team. At that time, she was the only person of color in the writers' room for Veep.

In 2016, Wilkinson left Veep to become a writer for the TV show Brooklyn Nine-Nine. After working in TV, she decided to focus on writing her first book. She also works as a consultant for advertising campaigns.

Alexis Wilkinson has written for many well-known publications. These include Time, Vulture, The New Yorker, Harper's Bazaar, and Elle.

In November 2019, it was announced that Wilkinson had written an audiobook. It is called The Co-Founder and was made for Serial Box. The story is about two women who start a business. They hire a man to help them sell their product to investors in Silicon Valley. This audiobook is also being made into a film.
