Alfonso Álvarez Gándara (born on 27 January 1939 – died on 2 August 2021) was a Spanish politician. He helped start the socialist movement in Galicia. This movement aimed to create a fairer society for everyone.

Early Life and Writing Career
Alfonso Álvarez Gándara was born in Tui, Spain. His father was Darío Álvarez Blázquez. Alfonso began his career by writing articles for local newspapers. These articles are called columns.
In 1967, he won an important award called the Premio Fernández Latorre. He received this award for an article he wrote. The article was titled "La Iglesia no habla la misma lengua que los gallegos."
Joining Politics
Alfonso Álvarez Gándara joined the Galician Socialist Party. This was a political group that wanted to make changes in Galicia. He quickly became a very important member of the party.
He tried to get elected in the 1977 Spanish general election. However, he did not win a seat that time. Later, in the 1979 Spanish local elections, he was elected. He ran as part of the Galician Unity party.
Leading a Party
From 1981 to 1983, Alfonso Álvarez Gándara was the Secretary General of the Partido Galeguista. Being a Secretary General means he was a main leader of this political party.
Career as a Lawyer
In 1989, he became a member of the Vigo Bar Association. This is a group for lawyers in the city of Vigo. Later, he became the President of the Galician Bar Council. This means he was in charge of the main group for lawyers in all of Galicia.
Later Life
Alfonso Álvarez Gándara passed away in Vigo, Spain, on 2 August 2021. He was 82 years old.
