History of Alfred
Alfred is found along State Highway 359. It is about 12 miles (19 kilometers) northeast of Alice. The community started in 1888. At that time, this area was part of Nueces County. It was first called Driscoll.
A post office was opened in Driscoll in 1890. In 1904, a railway called the St. Louis, Brownsville and Mexico Railway was built through the area. Robert Driscoll, who owned a large ranch nearby, wanted a train station named after himself. However, there could not be two post offices with the same name.
So, N. T. Wright, who was the postmaster of old Driscoll, agreed to change the name of his post office. He chose the name Alfred to honor his father, Alfred Wright. His father had been the very first postmaster of the community.
Another railway, the Texas and New Orleans Railroad, also built tracks through the area in 1907. In 1912, a school district was created for Alfred. By 1914, the town had about 50 people. It also had a general store and six cattle breeders.
Alfred's population was largest in 1927, with an estimated 300 people. By 1936, Alfred had a school, several homes, and farms around it. During the 1940s and 1950s, the number of people living in Alfred slowly went down. By 1969, only about 20 people were estimated to live there. In 1979 and 1990, Alfred was a spread-out rural community with a population of just ten people.
