What Does the Name Mean?
The name "Algarrobo del Águila" has two parts. "Algarrobo" refers to a type of tree, like a carob tree or a caldén tree. People aren't sure if it was an algarrobo or a caldén tree that stood in front of the old police station. The second part, "del Águila," means "of the eagle." This refers to a white-breasted eagle. So, the name basically means "Carob Tree of the Eagle."
A Look at History
For more than six thousand years, the land where Algarrobo del Águila is now was home to native peoples. They lived there long before modern towns were built. By the late 1800s, the area saw changes. A leader named Cacique Juan José Catriel lived with his community in this region until about 1876. The village itself was officially established on February 5, 1899.
