About Alice Turner Curtis's Family

Alice Turner Curtis was born in Sullivan, Maine. She was the youngest child of John Vinal Turner and Susan Ann Spear. Her father, John, worked as a sailmaker.

On May 20, 1895, Alice married Irving Curtis in Boston, Massachusetts. Both of them lived in Boston at that time. Alice was also a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution (D.A.R.). This group is for people whose ancestors helped during the American Revolution. Her grandfather, Fobes Turner, was also part of a similar group called the Sons of the American Revolution.

Alice had three older brothers and sisters: John V, Anna (or Annie S), and Ella F. They were all born in Sullivan, Maine, just like Alice. She even dedicated one of her books, Marjorie in the Sunny South, to her sister Anna.

Alice's Life and Education

Alice Turner Curtis went to public schools in Maine and Massachusetts. She also had private tutors who taught her at home.

She was interested in politics and supported the Republican party in 1936. She also believed that women should have the right to vote, which was an important movement at the time.

Besides being a D.A.R. member, Alice was part of the New England Women's Club in Boston. She also wrote for Youth's Companion, a popular magazine for young people. When she wasn't writing, she enjoyed reading, going for walks, and taking care of her home.

Even though her first known book, Marjorie's Way, was published in 1904, she had been working as a writer since at least 1895.
