Biography
Alicia Wiencek was born on April 23, 1918. Her hometown was Chicopee, Massachusetts. She loved art and studied at two well-known schools. These were the Art Students League of New York and the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center.
In 1945, she married her art professor, Ernest Fiene. They had two children together. Before they got married, Alicia and Ernest worked on art projects. They created large fresco murals together. These murals were for the Central High School of Needle Trades.
Her Famous Mural
In 1937, Alicia Wiencek painted a special mural. It was called North Carolina Cotton Industry. This painting is in the Post Office in Mooresville, North Carolina. The money for this mural came from a government program. It was called the Treasury Section of Fine Arts (TSFA). This program helped artists create public art during the Great Depression. It was part of the "New Deal" efforts to help the country.
Alicia Wiencek Fiene's artwork is also part of a museum collection. You can find her work at the Detroit Institute of Arts.
She passed away in New York City on February 17, 1961.
