All Saints' Church is a very old and important church in Sunderland, Maryland. It is an Episcopal church, which is a type of Christian church. You can find it at 100 Lower Marlboro Road in Calvert County, Maryland.

The church is part of All Saint's Parish. This parish was one of the first 30 Anglican parishes created in 1692. These parishes were set up to serve the people in the area known as the Province of Maryland.

The First Church Building

The very first church building for All Saint's Parish was built in 1693. It was a simple structure made of logs. This first church was built on a piece of land called Kemp's Desire. A person named Thomas Hillary gave this land for the church.

Growing and Changing

The log church was made bigger in 1703 and 1704. It was also fixed up many times over the years. Eventually, a new, stronger building was needed. The current brick church replaced the old log one. It stands on a hill between Maryland Routes 4, 262, and 2.

The Current Church Building

The church building you see today was constructed between 1774 and 1777. It is a beautiful example of Georgian architecture. This style was popular in the 1700s.

Building Materials and Style

The church is made of brick using a special pattern called Flemish bond. This pattern makes the walls very strong and attractive. Some of the bricks have a shiny, glazed look, which adds to its beauty.

How it Was Built

All Saint's Parish was part of the official church of the Province of Maryland back then. This meant that the church building was paid for using taxes collected from the county. A future bishop named Thomas Claggett was the church's leader, or rector, during this time.

A Recognized Historic Place

All Saints' Church is very important because of its history and architecture. Because of this, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1973. This list includes places that are important to the history of the United States.

All Saints' Church Today

Today, All Saints' Church is still an active and busy church. It is part of the Episcopal Diocese of Maryland. The current leader of the church is the Reverend Andrew Rutledge.
