Allsvenskan is a very important Swedish league for women's team handball. It is the second-highest league in Sweden for this sport. Before 2010, the name Allsvenskan was actually used for the top league. The Swedish Handball Federation organizes and runs the league.

Before 2010, the second-highest league was called Division 1. This league had two parts: Nörra (which means northern) and Sôdra (which means southern).

How the League Works

The Allsvenskan league has 12 teams. Each team plays every other team twice during the season. This means they play one game at home and one game away against each opponent. This type of play is called a double round-robin. In total, each team plays 22 games.

Moving Up to the Top League

The team that wins the Allsvenskan league gets to move up. They are promoted to the Handbollsligan. The Handbollsligan is the highest league for women's handball in Sweden.

The team that finishes second in Allsvenskan also has a chance to move up. They play special games called a play-off against the team that finished 11th in the Handbollsligan. These play-off games are a "best of five" series. This means the first team to win three games wins the whole series. The winner of this series gets to play in the Handbollsligan next season.

Moving Down to a Lower League

The two teams that finish at the very bottom of the Allsvenskan league are relegated. This means they move down to Division 1, which is a lower league.

The teams that finish 9th and 10th in Allsvenskan also play in a relegation playoff. These are special games to decide if they will stay in Allsvenskan or move down to Division 1.
