Almost Home (also known as On the Move) was a cool educational television show. TVOntario made and showed it around 1972 or 1973. The show was about a young man named Ken Matthews. He was from Cornwall, Ontario. Ken traveled all the way to Manitoba. Then, he started hitchhiking back home to Ontario. He went through Northern Ontario and then headed south. Each episode showed the different people Ken met on his journey. This show was also used in junior high and high schools. It helped students learn about different places and people.

Adventures on the Road: Episode Guide

  • 3- "Words are Wild Birds": Ken learns about how businesses work. He learns from the people who own a gas station and store by the road.
  • 4- "Playing the Angles": Ken and another person hitchhiking get a ride. They are with two people who are in a tricky situation.
  • 5- "It's My Country and You Better Believe It": Ken visits Manitoulin Island. He learns about its amazing history from the Indigenous people who live there.
  • 6- "Just Talk to Us": Ken sees how different groups of people work together. Sometimes they struggle on a big building project.
  • 7- "An Old Man With A Suitcase Full Of Books": Ken gets a job picking tobacco. He meets an older traveler who teaches him an important lesson.
  • 8- "Remember All the Things We Were Going to Do?": Ken goes to Niagara Falls, Ontario. He wants to meet an old friend. His friend is facing some challenges in his life.
  • 9- "Almost Home": Ken is heading back to Cornwall. He meets a professional car racer and an architect. This makes Ken think about his own future plans.
  • 10- "Never the Same Again": This was the final planned episode. It would have put all of Ken's adventures together. It would show how his travels changed him and made him think about helping others.
