The Alpine Lodge Motel in Goulburn, Australia, is a special building with a long history. It used to be a group of homes and then a guesthouse. Now, it's a motel. It's so important that it was added to the New South Wales State Heritage Register on April 2, 1999. This means it's a protected historical site.

A Look Back in Time

From Homes to a Coffee Palace

The buildings that make up the Alpine Lodge Motel today were first built in 1872. A local businessman named Charles Rogers had them built. They started as four separate 'terrace houses'. These were homes that shared side walls with each other. Some had two floors, and some had three.

Later, these homes were changed into guesthouse accommodation. This means people could stay there for a short time, like a hotel. In 1893, Charles Rogers joined the houses together. He also renovated them.

He opened them as the Metropolitan Coffee Palace. This was part of the Temperance movement. This movement encouraged people to avoid alcohol. So, a 'coffee palace' was a place where people could stay and enjoy drinks and food, but without any alcohol. Mr. W. Fry ran the coffee palace, and it was also known as Fry's Coffee Palace.

Changes Over the Years

The building continued to be a coffee palace for many years. It had different owners. It was known as Field's Coffee Palace and later Stock's Coffee Palace. It operated as a coffee palace until at least 1911.

Over time, one of the four original terrace houses was taken down. In the 1990s, the building was updated again. It was changed into the modern motel accommodation you see today.

Why It's Special

The Alpine Lodge Hotel is listed on the New South Wales State Heritage Register. It was added to this important list on April 2, 1999. Being on this register means the building is recognized for its historical value. It is protected so that future generations can learn about its past.
