Alpine skiing is an exciting sport where athletes ski down snowy mountains as fast as they can. At the 2018 Winter Paralympics, skiers competed in five different types of races: downhill, Super-G, Super Combined, slalom, and giant slalom. These races test different skills, from speed to quick turns.

Race Schedule

Skiers had practice runs for the downhill race on March 7th. Unfortunately, their practice runs on March 8th and 9th were cancelled.

Key Race Dates

  • Downhill: This fast-paced race was the first event. It took place on March 10th.
  • Super-G: All skiers competed in the Super-G on March 11th.
  • Super Combined: This event happened on March 13th. It combined a Super-G run in the morning with a slalom run in the afternoon.
  • Slalom: The slalom event was held on March 14th and 15th. Both women and men raced in the morning. In the afternoons, women did their second run first, followed by the men.
  • Giant Slalom: This was the final alpine skiing race. It happened on March 17th and 18th. Men and women raced together in the morning. In the afternoons, women raced first, then men started about 30 minutes later.

Downhill Winners

  • Women's Downhill (Vision Impaired): Henrieta Farkasova from Slovakia, guided by Nataly Subrtova, won the first gold medal of the Paralympics! Millie Knight from Great Britain won silver, and Eleonor Sana from Belgium won bronze.
  • Women's Downhill (Standing): Marie Bochet from France earned the gold medal. Andrea Rothfuss from Germany won silver, and Mollie Jepsen from Canada took bronze.
  • Men's Downhill (Vision Impaired): Mac Marcoux from Canada won gold. Jakub Krako from Slovakia won silver, and Giacomo Bertagnolli from Italy won bronze.
  • Men's Downhill (Standing): Theo Gmur from Switzerland won the gold medal. Arthur Bauchet from France won silver, and Markus Salcher from Austria won bronze.
