Altamirano is a town located in the Mexican state of Chiapas. It serves as the main town for the larger Altamirano municipality that surrounds it. In 2010, the town of Altamirano had a population of 9,200 people. This was an increase from 6,155 people in 2005.
A Look at Altamirano's History
Altamirano is known for a significant event in its recent history. In January 1994, it was one of the towns taken over by a group called the Zapatista Army of National Liberation (EZLN). This group started an uprising to bring attention to the rights and needs of indigenous people and farmers in the region. They wanted better living conditions and more fairness.
