Alton Little Theater: A Community Stage

This theater is one of the oldest places in Illinois that has been putting on live shows without stopping. It's a big part of the local community.

How It Started

A local English teacher named Dorothy Colonius had a great idea. She wanted to create a theater where people from Alton could act and enjoy plays. She worked with other teachers and their students to make this dream come true. Dorothy became the main leader, called the "artistic director," and she really pushed for the theater to have its own permanent home.

Long-Running Shows

Alton Little Theater, often called ALT, puts on about five different plays every year. Their season usually runs from September to May. By 2022, they had produced more than 500 shows! That's a lot of stories brought to life on stage.

Awards and Recognition

ALT is known for its great performances. They often get nominated for "Arts For Life" awards. These awards celebrate excellent theater productions. For example, their play Radio Gals in 2009 received many nominations and even won two awards!
