Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Alton Little Theater is a special place in Alton, Illinois, where people come together to create amazing live plays! It's a "community theater," which means it's run by local people who love acting and putting on shows. It started way back in 1933, thanks to a local English teacher named Dorothy Colonius and her students. They wanted to bring the magic of theater to their town. Dorothy Colonius became the main artistic director, guiding the theater's creative side and helping it find a permanent home.

What is Alton Little Theater?

Alton Little Theater, often called ALT, is one of the oldest theaters in Illinois that has been putting on shows without stopping since it began. It's a non-profit organization, which means it uses any money it earns to put on more shows and keep the theater running, rather than for private profit.

A Long History of Shows

ALT traditionally puts on five different plays or musicals each year. These shows usually run from September to May. By the start of their 89th season in 2022, Alton Little Theater had produced over 500 different plays! This means they have brought countless stories and characters to life on their stage for many generations of audiences. As of 2025, they are celebrating their 92nd season of continuous performances.

Awards and Recognition

Alton Little Theater has received nominations for various awards, including the "Arts For Life" awards. These awards celebrate excellence in community theater. For example, their 2009 production of Radio Gals received several nominations and even won two awards! This shows how much hard work and talent the people at ALT put into their performances.
