Alvin Holsey (born 1965) is a top leader in the United States Navy. He is a four-star admiral and a naval aviator, which means he is a trained pilot. Since November 2024, he has been in charge of the United States Southern Command. This important job means he helps keep the U.S. safe by working with countries in Central and South America, and the Caribbean.

Early Life and Education

Alvin Holsey grew up in Fort Valley, Georgia. He joined the Navy through a special program called Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps (NROTC). This was at Morehouse College in 1988. There, he earned a bachelor's degree in Computer Science.

Later, in 1995, he continued his education. He received a master's degree in Management from Troy State University. In 2010, he also attended the Joint Forces Staff College. This college helps military leaders learn how to work together.

A Career in the Navy

Admiral Holsey has had many important jobs in the Navy. He is a skilled naval aviator, meaning he flies aircraft for the Navy.

He commanded the USS Makin Island (LHD-8) from 2013 to 2014. This was the Navy's first large warship to use a hybrid electric engine. Before that, he was the ship's second-in-command.

From 2018 to 2020, he led Carrier Strike Group 1. This is a large group of warships, including an aircraft carrier. It travels together to perform missions around the world.

Important Leadership Roles

Admiral Holsey has held several high-level positions. From 2021 to 2022, he was in charge of the Navy Personnel Command. This group manages all Navy sailors and their careers. He also served as the Deputy Chief of Naval Personnel.

In 2022, he was chosen to become a vice admiral. He then became the military deputy commander of United States Southern Command. This role helps manage military operations in Central and South America.

In July 2024, he was nominated for an even higher rank: admiral. He then took command of the entire United States Southern Command in November 2024. This makes him one of the highest-ranking officers in the U.S. military.
