History of the Alvord I. Smith House

The Alvord I. Smith House was built in 1868. Its first owner was Alvord Smith. At the time, he worked as a farmer. Later, he became a general agent for a life insurance company.

After Alvord Smith, several other people lived in the house. Around 1880, Herman Steffen bought the home. Mr. Steffen had retired from managing a place called the St. Louis House and Saloon downtown.

What Does the Alvord I. Smith House Look Like?

The Alvord I. Smith House is a great example of a popular style from the mid-1800s. It shows a mix of Italianate and Greek Revival styles. Many houses in Davenport from that time looked similar.

Key Features of the House

The house has a boxy, almost square shape. Its roof is a hipped roof, which means it slopes gently on all four sides. The roof also has wide eaves, which are the parts that hang over the walls. Below the eaves, there's a simple cornice, which is a decorative molding.

The windows have special decorations above them. These are called cast iron lintels. They look like small, flat triangles, similar to tiny pediments. A small porch welcomes visitors at the main entrance of the house.
