Life and career
Amélie Beaury was born in Barcelona, Spain. She later added "Saurel" to her name to honor her mother's family, who had a long history. Her family lived in Spain and Corsica before moving to France.
In France, Amélie joined the Académie Julian, a famous art school. She paid for her art lessons by helping with office work and managing money at the school.
Becoming a Portrait Painter
Amélie learned from well-known artists like J. Lefebvre, T. Robert-Fleury, and J.P. Laurens. She became a very popular portrait painter, partly thanks to the artist Léon Bonnat.
In 1895, she married Rodolphe Julian, who founded the art school. After their marriage, she took charge of the women's art studio at the Académie Julian. Another student, Marie Bashkirtseff, wrote about "l'espagnole" (the Spanish woman) in her journals.
Amélie first showed her art at the Salon de Paris in 1874. The Salon was a big art exhibition in Paris. By 1880, she was seen as one of the most important artists showing her work there.
Family and Legacy
Amélie Beaury-Saurel was very generous. She made sure her mother and sister had everything they needed.
After her husband Rodolphe Julian passed away, she bought and designed a place called "Château Julian." This was in Lapalud, a village in Provence where her husband was born. She created it to remember him. Amélie Beaury-Saurel died in Paris.
Awards and recognition
Amélie Beaury-Saurel received several awards for her art. She won a Third Medal at the Salon in 1885. She also earned a bronze medal at the 1889 World's Fair, a huge international exhibition.
In 1887, she showed a self-portrait (a painting of herself) at the Salon. This drawing received great praise. People admired her for her strong and powerful painting style.
Her work was also featured in a special art show in 2018. This exhibit was called Women in Paris 1850–1900.
