Amalia was born to Eric Esaias Setterborg, a businessman, and Helena Charlotta Bronander. In 1834, she married another businessman, Johan Peter Redec. Sadly, her husband passed away in 1850. Before that, her husband faced financial difficulties, meaning he lost his money.

After her husband's death, Amalia moved to Gothenburg, a city in Sweden. There, she started working as a piano teacher. She taught at two schools: the Societetsskolan and Matilda Halls skola, which was a girls' school.

A Life in Music

Besides teaching, Amalia Redec was also a concert pianist. This means she performed piano music for audiences in public. Her performances helped her become a recognized musician.

Her Musical Legacy

Amalia's music was mostly easy to play and perfect for entertaining at home. During her time, it was common for ladies from wealthier families to play the piano to entertain guests. Her music fit this need perfectly.

While she was not as well-remembered in the 20th century, Amalia Redec was very famous in Sweden during her own lifetime. People knew her name and her music. She was even included in a special collection of well-known composers called Det sjungande Sverige (which means 'Singing Sweden'). This book, published in 1874, featured 100 popular songs and composers.
