Early Life and First Steps
Amber Atherton was born in Hong Kong in 1991. Her father was a pilot. Her parents always encouraged her to be creative and start her own projects. Amber began learning how to code when she was just ten years old. As a child, she sold books and CD-ROMs online. As a teenager, she also did some modeling. She went to Benenden School, a private boarding school in England. In 2021, she started an award there to help young students become entrepreneurs.
Building Businesses
When Amber was in high school, she started a blog. She posted pictures of herself and her friends wearing jewelry. This led her to create My Flash Trash in 2007, when she was 16. At first, she resold jewelry she bought during trips to Hong Kong. Amber studied at the London College of Fashion for two years. She also interned at famous magazines like Vogue and fashion houses like Hermès. She left college before finishing her degree to focus on her business.
TV and Growing My Flash Trash
In 2011, Amber Atherton was a main cast member on the TV show Made in Chelsea. She also helped create the show and choose the cast. Her business, My Flash Trash, became even more popular in 2012. This happened after Kate Middleton, the Princess of Wales, bought seven pieces of jewelry from her website. The Princess wore them during a royal tour. Amber worked with investors and partnered with a factory in China. In 2016, she sold My Flash Trash to the manufacturer for about £2 million. Amber also created her own line of accessories. These were sold in special fashion stores in London. She was also a judge on a TV show called Pocket Money Pitch.
Zyper and New Ventures
After selling My Flash Trash, Amber started a new company called Zyper. She began this company through a special program called Y Combinator. She raised a lot of money for Zyper, including £750,000 in 2017 and £2 million in 2018. In 2021, Zyper was bought by Discord.
