Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Ambrose Dixon (born around 1619 – died April 12, 1687) was an early American pioneer. He was a Quaker, a member of a Christian group known for its peaceful beliefs. Ambrose was born in England and moved to America when he was young. He first lived in the Virginia Colony before settling in Maryland.

Life and Times

Ambrose Dixon married a woman named Mary. She was the widow of Henry Peddington. They married sometime between July and October of 1647.

In 1651, Ambrose Dixon and others were involved in an event concerning Native Americans. This led to legal action against them. A court order from May 10, 1651, stated that they had acted against the laws of Virginia. The order required them to appear before the Governor and Council in James City.

Ambrose Dixon was a Quaker. Because Quakers sometimes faced difficulties for their beliefs, he moved to Somerset County, Maryland, by 1663. His home there became the first meeting place for Quakers in Maryland.

He took on public roles in his community. On January 4, 1666, he was chosen to be the Surveyor for Highways. This job involved planning and maintaining roads. On March 3, 1671, he was elected as a delegate to the Maryland Assembly. This meant he was chosen to represent Annemessex, Maryland, in the government. However, he never actually attended the Assembly meetings.

Ambrose Dixon passed away in 1687. He died at his large farm, which was known as Dixon's Choice. He is an ancestor to many Americans today.
