Sir Ambrose Jermyn was an important English gentleman who lived a long time ago (from 1511 to 1577). He came from a place called Rushbrooke in Suffolk, England. He worked for the royal court, was a judge, and owned a lot of land.

Family Background

Ambrose Jermyn's father was Sir Thomas Jermyn, who also lived in Rushbrooke. His mother was Anne Spring, whose family was from Lavenham.

Ambrose Jermyn's Work

When his father passed away in 1552, Ambrose Jermyn took over the family home, Rushbrooke Hall, and all the land. He was a strong believer in the Roman Catholic faith. Queen Mary I, who was also Catholic, made him a knight. This meant he was given a special title, "Sir."

He became a "Justice of the Peace" (JP) in Suffolk. This was like being a local judge or a very important police officer. His job was to make sure laws were followed in his area. During Queen Mary's rule, he upheld the laws related to the Catholic faith. Later, when Queen Elizabeth I became queen, the laws changed.

Sir Ambrose also served as the "Sheriff of Norfolk and Suffolk" in 1558 and again in 1572. A sheriff was a very important official who helped the king or queen enforce laws in a county.

Marriage and Children

In 1538, Sir Ambrose Jermyn married Anne Heveningham. She was the daughter of George Heveningham. Together, they had thirteen children! Some of their children included:

  • Sir Robert Jermyn: He was their oldest son who lived to become an adult. He followed in his father's footsteps as a magistrate, but he was a Protestant.
  • John Jermyn: He married Mary Tollemache. Their son was Thomas Jermyn.
  • Susan Jermyn: She married Lyonell Tollemache. Their son became Sir Lionel Tollemache, 1st Baronet.
